The Melbourne Cup

On Friday 5 of November 2010, during the afternoon class, we saw a very interesting video about The Melbourne Cup, its history, some facts and about how it was this year. After that we answered some trivia questions about the video. Then the students were divided into two groups; one group continued knitting for "Wrap with Love" and another group made fascinators in the style and spirit of the Melbourne Cup.

It was a very pleasant and interesting afternoon class because it was an entertaining way to learn about horse-races, the Melbourne Cup and Australian traditions and culture.

Sustainability What Can We Do?

Hi everyone!

This year, everyone is talking about sustainability.
What is it? What does it mean for our lives?
It means that we can't keep using the earth's resources as fast as we are, because they will run out very quickly.

We will need to change our lives to make things last longer.

First, you should work out what you're using now.
Then you should try to make a new plan.
Think about things you can do at home. This will help to save money too.

Can you save energy?

Think about recycling too. Reuse things whenever you can or find someone else who can make use of them.

Don't forget to share your ideas with others.

Green Day

Thank you to all the staff and students for a great and successful Green Day. We certainly learned a lot and we had a lot of fun shopping at our Swap party, making posters and creating some wonderful items from recycled home products rather than throwing them away.. There were some very interesting ideas and we discovered some very creative ABE students!!

Tales of Mystery and Suspense from Campbelltown

Mr and Mrs enjoyed their retirement life. Mr had been an engineer when he finished university. He earned a lot of money and invested in property. Mrs Low saved a lot of money every day. They owned their own house. Their two sons and daughter had married and all owned their own homes. Mr and Mrs had six grandsons and two granddaughters. Sometimes they came to visit them.

The couple were devoted and inseparable in their retirement. They did not worry about their retirement life, because they had a good plan when they were young and they had healthy bodies. Sometimes they had travelled for their wedding anniversaries.

Mr and Mrs Low drank their milk teas face to face. It was a quiet and romantic evening. There were six burning candles and some breads and biscuits all made by Mrs Low were on the table. They were chatting about their donations to help people when they had passed away, both their organs and their money. Mrs Low said “I want to give up all my money to help some children get an education but I have to keep whole to see God.” Her husband laughed and replied “I would donate some of my organs to save other people to get life but I spent all my money on my last life.” They discussed their ideas very happily. However they had different ideas.

They talked until midnight. They felt very tired. They had to go to bed. They loved the fantastic chatting.

PHILIP’S HOUSE.

They are sitting in a warm room ,between them is a beautiful table cloth, and on the table are 7 candles in a candelabra. There is a special plate with croissants on it and another plate with a bread loaf. One more plate has some cakes, and there are special porcelain cups with a Romeos and Juliet pattern. Behind the table there are many beautiful award plates and a glass cabinet. He keeps them in the cabinet and some of them are hanging on the wall. The room is lovely and beautifully decorated.

They have been friendly for a long time. They have both worked but now they are retired.

One night Philip decided to invite Juliet for a cup of tea with him in his house. Juliet accepted this invitation and she prepared herself to meet him. She was so happy because she had been interested in him for a while.

They were sitting and talking and remembering many things in the past, Philip surprised Juliet when he whispered in her ear” I love you, let’s go to bed.”

Juliet was shocked and embarrassed and she said “What?”
Philip said “I love you.”
“What are you saying?”Juliet looked surprised. "We are too old."
Philip “We are still young, I am very interested in living!"
Juliet “You surprise me.”Let me think.”

Good To Have Friends

It was on Sunday, a lot of people went out with their families and some had a barbeque with their friends. But there was an old man who was walking on the street alone. He looked so sad. He was around 60 years old. During his walk, he met an old friend. She looked friendly and kind. The had a short chat and then she invited him to her house which was near the street.

At her house, she cooked some food for him. They talked about their lives. He complained about his kids. They were always busy and never took him anywhere. She replied quickly
"My kids too!" They are always working and studying. When they were free they went out with their friends. I always stayed home by myself. I also cooked and cleaned the house for them too. Being parents was a hard job. The old man started to laugh and said
"I thought only my kids did that! That is how kids are. So we can't complain about them because when we were young we did the same, didn't we? Then they both started laughing.

"What should we do to get them to think about our feelings?" the lady asked.
"Just do the same to them," the old man answered.
" We should have a party with our friends and go to meet our friends at the park every weekend. Let them do the housework and cook for themselves.
Then they will see how it feels."
They both agreed and that's what they started to do since that day.

The House Burglar

Clayton is a married man who is 60 years old. He has a very happy personality. He is married to Nancy. Nancy is a 55 year old woman with a friendly personality.

One day when Clayton and Nancy had just finished their morning tea they heard something or someone outside. Clayton and Nancy looked at each other with a worried look on their faces.

Nancy spoke to Clayton “I will go check out the backyard in the backyard and you can go check the front yard.” After looking outside Nancy noticed that there was no one there and went to tell Clayton but when she got back inside Nancy saw a burglar in the house.

Nancy noticed the burglar going through her expensive collection and placing it in a black. Then Clayton came back and saw the burglar and quickly went to get the phone and called the police department stating there was a burglar and to come quickly.

The police eventually came but by then the burglar had left the house and stolen all of the expensive collection. Clayton and Nancy had to go down to the police station and make a statement also to give a description of the burglar who was wearing a black mask over his face, long black shirt and also long black pants and black shoes.

The police quickly went to their vehicles to look for the burglar around the streets but they couldn’t trace him.

The Friday Election

Last Friday, our group had an election. It was a little bit different because it was to show us how we could vote properly and how the preferential voting system works in Australia.
We had 4 candidates

Michael spoke for 'The Pizza Hut'
Mark spoke for 'McDonalds'
Nawal spoke for 'Subway'
Miguel other was representing KFC.
We had to listen to their speeches and fill out a ballot paper.
After the votes were counted, we watched while they were sorted by preference. I never really understood how it worked before now.

When the results were complete, we found out that Nawal had won.

Courtyard Writing

The Courtyard

When I walked in the courtyard I felt so peaceful. There was a nice view and the weather was nice and sunny.

I saw a lot of people walking up and down. Some were sitting under the trees, some talked with their friends. There were some chairs and a few big umbrellas for people to sit down and relax. So my friends and I sat down and have a chat. While we sat down and were talking, some pigeons came around us and made noise. We feel like someone was singing a song for us. It made me so sleepy.

When I looked around I saw a small garden with many kinds of flowers with different colours. In the garden there also was a small bridge make the garden look like a small village. At the side way was a walkway which had trees with no leaves over lapping the shelter which could have been part of design.

When we sat down for a while, we smelled something that made me very hungry. We tried to look around where the smell was coming from. When we looked down there was also a canteen.
Even on the way down to the canteen there was also green grass with some flowers. I really like this courtyard. It's such a wonderful courtyard.

Dalin

Today Kerry let us look at our courtyard. I came to this TAFE about three years ago but I have never noted our courtyard. Today when I was looking around it, I had a different feeling.

This day is a sunny day, just a little bit windy. In the courtyard, it was very quiet because this time is class time. But you could hear big noises from the crows. Suddenly I heard a nice voice from a tree. Which birds were making this sound? I tried to find it. I went toward the tree and looked carefully, the two small birds on the tree looked kike happiness. They looked like people homes chatting to each other. I thought that they are best friends. One young boy passed under the tree and the birds flew away.

I walked along the courtyard’s terrace. On the life side there are some plants. I looked at one kind of plant. It was very beautiful. It wasn’t very tall and it had small red colour berries with green leaves. I kept going. In front of me appeared a small wooden bridge. I walked on to the little bridge and over it. I seemed to be walking in the forest. Both sides of the small bridge there are two pine trees. Though now it is winter, they still are dark green’ tall and straight.

Suddenly I heard somebody laughing and I looked in the direction the laugh was coming from and saw a few students. They sat around a table under the shade. They were chatting and laughing. They were a lot of fun. I looked around the courtyard and saw another two students. They were very quiet, just reading books.

Our TAFE courtyard wasn’t big but we felt very comfortable. We can relax there and also we can meet friends there too. I like our courtyard especially when it’s under the winter sun.

TAFE courtyard

In the winter, I walk around the TAFE courtyard. I see some people sitting the chairs and chatting. A lady is reading her some folders. A woman is relaxed on a chair.

There are many trees which have no leave. Ten benches are fixed on the courtyard and three bins are used for waste. There are some little yellow flowers in the garden.

The courtyard is very neat, quiet, wide and clean. People are very comfortable under the warm sunshine. We enjoy this environment.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURTYARD

It’s a bright but cold day in the courtyard; there are 5 tables with shade umbrellas and some chairs. The courtyard is surrounded by three buildings and in front is the way to the Canteen. We can hear some birds, especially one raven (very scary). A great part of the trees is naked because of winter but some have leaves still. There are ten benches, two made of metal. Some doves are trying to eat crumbs from the ground.

It’s a lovely and quiet place to eat something, have a cup of tea or just to sit and talk with a friend. Of course, this is only if you can tolerate this temperature (it’s too cold for me)!

On the top of the library building is a parabolic antenna and a normal antenna as well.

On the left side of the courtyard you can see some purple lavender flower. For me this was a discovery because that plant doesn’t exist in my country, it has a very strong aroma but it is very pleasant.

Miguel

There are several courtyards in Campbelltown College. One that is bigger than the others is between the library, K and M blocks and if you walk down the terraced stairs you can reach the canteen. The courtyard has different kinds of trees and flowers and has beautiful scenery.

The trees are contrasting in the season of winter. Some are deciduous trees as like a sleepy snake but some are evergreen trees the same as an energetic child. In the middle, it has five shade umbrellas; below the umbrellas there are table and chairs. People sit on the chairs chatting, laughing and relaxing. Some people sit on the benches enjoying the sunshine to keep them warm. At the other side near M block, there is a feature garden which is designed in the Japanese style.

Although the courtyard has not special flowers and trees, the place gives people a chance to simply relax in the tranquil surrounding

This Morning in the Courtyard at TAFE

The courtyard is a big area and has buildings all around. The library is attached to one building and the canteen is nearby.

The courtyard is a good place for all students and teachers in TAFE to come together at lunch time and the morning tea.

Especially when it is a sunny day, a lot of people come together in the courtyard because the courtyard has umbrellas and plenty of chairs so we can sit there and have lunch.

I am sitting on a chair. I feel relaxed and I can see the blue sky. Some different trees have no leaves because of the cold season and also some of them are different varieties of plants and flower, some have red berries and a yellow flower.

I can hear people talking and laughing and some birds are walking around the courtyard and they are looking for food.

At the moment I am sitting on a chair and I can feel the wind blowing with fresh air. I feel relaxed and comfortable.

Bounmy

Courtyard

There is a beautiful courtyard in the front of the block K building. Outside is a sunny, clear blue sky day. I take a look in the courtyard.

There are terraced steps around the courtyard. The bald trees catch my eyes firstly. There are different kinds of bushes around the trees. Some of the bushes have dark red leaves, some of the bushes have red berries.

I find some jonquils with yellow flowers which are my favourite. There is a small curved shape bridge in the middle of the courtyard. It is made of wood, with black paint on the top and red paint on the four side edges. I walk over the bridge, and then sit down to relax for a while. There are two green bushes at the end of the bridge. They look like two guards standing up on either side. When I sit down discover they have little light blue berries. I have not notice them before. I pick them up and crush them, smelling them. It is a fresh pine wood smell. I also hear the crows singing loudly. Opposite the bridge, there is a lot of lavender around the bald trees. The soft wind brings the lavender smell to me. It is so relaxing for me. I also see bees are working hard on the lavender and talking to each other.

What a comfortable and peaceful courtyard! I am happy to study in this environment.

Leah

The Courtyard

In the courtyard you can see hear feel and smell. You can feel the wind on your face. You can smell different flowers like lavender. At the courtyard you can hear people talking and laughing together.

When I walk down to the garden there is a bridge in between the flowers which is made of different shades of wood. While looking at the bridge I noticed many different flowers in many different colours which are red, yellow, purple and there were large green bushes as well.

On the far left of those flowers there is a pergola made of metal poles and at the top of the pergola that is covered with trees overlapping the top. Also at the bottom there are vines which are wrapped around the bottom of the pole.

While at the courtyard there are many things you can do, you can have morning tea and lunch, talk with your friends or just sit nicely in the sun and relax.

Lisa

Today is sunny and the wind is blowing softly. We’re all outside in the courtyard. I look up at the sky. It’s like a square shape because all the sides of the buildings together make a picture frame. We can see through to the blue sky.

In the courtyard there are umbrellas with chairs and benches, surrounded by trees and flower gardens. Also we can go straight down the terraced steps to go to the canteen and other ways too.

The students are sitting on chairs under the umbrellas and talking with friends. They seem to me very happy. Some students are passing by the garden.

Around the yard there are beautiful gardens but some trees have no leaves because it’s still winter yet, some plants have flowers blooming.

I most like one tree which has lavender flowers around. I like the purple colour. The wind is blowing and shaking the lavender flowers. It’s very sweet and many bees have collected the pollen from the flowers. It makes me feel peaceful and calm.

In this courtyard we can enjoy our break time, lunch and whenever we feel tired we can come and sit on the chairs or benches.

Eun

The Outdoors
In the mid- morning air are very cold winds,
The trees are very average also the other plants,
The people are talking and walking, carrying out their business
In the classroom.

People are littering on the ground,
They are a bit thoughtless dropping
Their rubbish. People are smoking.

Why the Earth is a Great Place to Live

Earth is one planet of our Solar System. It is a wonderful place in space. The sun light, air and water allow all life on the lands and the oceans.
There are many oceans, mountains and plains on the Earth. All plants and animals have their own special place to live; fish swim in the seas and rivers, animals live on the lands and mountains, insects hide under the ground.

There are rivers and seas, and when it rains, all the water runs down from the mountains along the rivers and through to the seas or oceans. It is a great construction of the Earth. This stops the flooding of the land and allows all trees and animals to grow up.

The seasons give life order. The trees rest in the cold winter. Then they open their flowers in the wet spring. The fruit comes in hot summer or cool autumn, winter is rest again.

The Earth is a great place to live. It has everything needed for nurture; temperatures, minerals, elements and the cycle of the food chain etc.
