The Fashion Parade

On the last day of term one there was a fashion parade in the ABE Centre. Some students modelled, some wrote descriptions, some read out the descriptions and others watched. The outfits were gorgeous and the models were good sports.

The Bellelli Family

This picture shows Degas' aunt with her husband and her daughters. The aunt stands in a regal and protective way, staring sadly past her children and husband. One daughter restrained by her mother’s hand on her shoulder, crosses her hands nervously and stares straight ahead. The other daughter screens her fists to her waist and looks towards her father. They are dressed in black and white. Her husband is shown apart from them, next to the desk and in front of the fireplace.
I like this painting because you can see some beautiful clothes from a long time ago.

I have chosen the painting “Woman Ironing” It was painted by Edgar Degas in 1869. Degas was born in Paris, France in 1834 and he was the old master of the impressionists.

In this painting, I can see Degas’s interest in poor people and respect for them.
It shows a poor woman of Paris who laundered shirts and did other menial tasks.

I chose this painting because it shows a scene from real life and also it reminds me of my everyday life.

Stage 3: Excursion to The Art Gallery of NSW

Wow! What a beautiful day out together. Jenny and Llewella's class traveled to the Art Gallery by train on Friday 28th March and the weather was perfect. We had a wonderful tour of some of the indigenous artworks led a by a very interesting lady. She explained the stories told through the indigenous art - it was fascinating and made the artworks come alive. They are not just curves and dots and lines. Each represents something special to the indigenous people. We also saw an exhibition of photos by Michael Riley - a fabulous indigenous photographer. The photos were amazing. Afterwards we ate lunch in the Domain soaking up the sun.

I have chosen the painting “The Garden at Sainte Adresse.” It was painted by Claude Monet in 1868. Monet was born in Paris, France in 1890 and was an impressionist artist.
In this painting, I can see Monet’s love of the family. This shows Monet’s family’s social life. The father dominates the scene.
I chose this painting because it reminds me of the old days & I feel comfortable with the scene and more relaxed.

I have chosen the painting. It was painted by Claude Monet in 1868. Monet was born in Paris, France in 1840 and was an impressionist.

In this painting. I can see Monet’s love of the family. It shows Monet’s family with Camille, his frequent model, and their son, Jean. it shows a warm, domestic scene. In this work, Monet gives the inviting impression that the empty place at the table is set for the person who is viewing the painting.

I chose this painting because it reminds me of back home in the olden days of how they dressed in fancy clothes, hats and how they wore gloves.

It also shows the family sat round the table and had meals all together.
It makes me feel like I’m back home.

I have chosen my painting. It was painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1885.
Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 and the pictures show a richly coloured Paris night.

In this painting. I can see three kinds of lights .It shows a gas lamp which reaches out from the café and softer light comes from the windows, the third kind of light comes from the stars in the heavens.

I chose this painting because it reminds me of Lebanon.
I love the stylish café in the centre and the colours are shown in a generous way.
It makes me think I’m in my own country.

The aboriginal people believed the Diamonds come from scale of Barramundi fish.

The right time the fish swam in the river and jumped the light scales were taken off
and the aboriginal people collected them.

Aboriginal used diamonds for to make marks on their body especially women.

Fruit Bats

This is the most popular piece in the gallery .There are 99 Bats hanging on the clothes line.

Every Bat had different shape and colour .They are called fruit Bats because these Bats just eat fruit .Also they had circle of life like a human circle life.

Cave

There was a painting about the caves when the white people gathered the aboriginal people and forced them into the cave, then they lit a fire in front of the cave so the smoke would kill them.

But the aboriginal people knew there were many tunnels between the caves that the white people didn’t know about it, so they found their way out through these tunnels.

The knowledge of the aboriginal people and their attachment to the land gave them the chance to escape and save themselves.

A New Year.... 2008

Hi Everyone

Welcome back to ABE for another year! Hope you had a great holiday.

I would like to wish a very warm welcome to any new students. I hope this is a good year for us all.

Sculpture by the Sea

Last week many of our classes went on excursions to see "Sculpture by the Sea".

We all met at Granville station and travelled together to Redfern where we changed trains for Bondi Junction. From there we caught a bus to Bondi and then took the coastal walk to Tamarama.

Along the way, we saw many different types of sculptures. Some were amazing. Some were funny and others were just odd.

Hopefully we will have a chance to go again next year.

Melbourne Cup Celebration

On 7 November, it was the Melbourne Cup Celebration in the ABE Centre. All the classes from ABEjoined together.

The teacher told us how to make the hats.We cut the tulle with the scissors. We used a needle and thread to sew the tulle and put it on the comb. Then we used the hot glue to put the flowers and the feathers on.

We put our hats on and stared at each other. We looked beautiful and a bit funny.

We played a horse race game.First we had to pick out an owner and jockey. We picked our horses then started the race. The owner rolled the dice to move the horse The first horse to get to the end won the race. No-one cheated and we all had fun.

Everybody put some money in the sweep. We chose the number and then wrote the name next to the horse number. At 3pm after the race, we found out who won. The winners got some money. The lucky last horse won the wooden spoon.

Finally, we had a morning tea and then we had a conversation circle. We asked questions and got information about each other. Then there was a hat competition and we took a group photo. We all enjoyed the Melbourne Cup Celebration.

The Questacon Science Show

Close Encounter with a Whale

In the holidays I went to Edent which is about 5 hours south of Sydney towards the Victorian border. Eden is a small town right on the water.I was very lucky to see many Humpbank whales as they were travelling south to the Antartica.My family and I went out in a boat. Many whales came up close to the boat. At times I was only about 4 metres away from whales. They are enormous magnificent animals. It is hard to believe that some people still kill them.
This is one of the photos I took.

I agree with this statement: “Modern toys do not develop the skills that 9-11 years olds need” because all children aged between 9 and 11 need physical co-ordination. This coordination teaches them how they can develop in society and communicate with others.

Children in this age should play with bicycles, bats and balls or some more advanced games like chess and reading books.

These things increase muscular strength and expand general knowledge for all children.

It was a clear bright Sunday morning. There was not a single cloud, only the sun was high in the blue sky. My family and I had planned a trip to the National Park for a picnic.

I was happily preparing the food for our picnic there, hoping to surprise my husband and children with some of the recipes I had learned recently from a cooking book. Shortly after putting the salad and sushi in packages, we got into the car and started driving.

Sunday morning’s traffic was light. We arrived at the National Park soon. We relaxed beside a peaceful lake and enjoyed the delicious lunch. My husband and I walked around the lake while my children played the ball.

It was the time to go home when the sun set. The children were excited; they talked and sang on the way home. Suddenly, we heard a bang sound erupting from the back of the car. My husband stopped the car by the road immediately, and we all got off the car. We realised the car tyre was flat. My husband and my son quickly changed the tire before night fell and we continued our way home.

What an unforgettable day it was!

Story 1
A Love Story
A Chinese story by Yu (Mon/Tues class)

Once upon a time in China, there was a girl who liked to go to school. But girls were not allowed to go to school at that time so she dressed up as a boy so she could attend school.

She loved school and while she was there she met a boy she loved very much and intended to marry him. She invited him to come to her home next year and promised that he could marry her sister. In fact there was no sister – she was going to pretend to be her sister.

The girl’s father forced her to marry a rich man when she went home. Just before wedding the boy came happily and asked, “Where is your sister?” Then the girl told the truth. He was shocked and regretted that he came so late. He died a short time after this.

On the girl’s wedding day she insisted that she on the journey to the ceremony she went to visit her love’s grave to say ‘farewell’. Otherwise she would refuse to be married. Her father was not happy but he allowed her to go.

In front of his grave her heart felt like it would break; she cried very hard. Suddenly to her surprise the grave opened. She jumped in it .Then the grave closed again slowly. Meantime a pair of beautiful butterflies flew out of the grave. They went to heaven together.

A very long time ago there was a bachelor who was desperately looking for a wife. One night as he drove his car home from work, he saw a girl hitch hiking so he stopped the car for her. She got in the car and the man gave her a lift home.

On the way home she was feeling very cold and asked the man if ahe could borrow his jacket. She told him she would give his jacket back the next morning. So he went to see her the next day but she is not in because her mother said she had already passed away.

The man would not believe the mother so the woman took him to her daughter’s gravesite. There was his jacket hanging over the headstone. He was so sad that stopped eating and drinking.

Not long after the bachelor died because he missed his lover very much and he committed suicide.

Computers as babysitters

Lots of parents these days use the computer as kind of babysitter for their children. It's cheap and handy and kids like it, so you can say it gives you peace of mind. What do you reckon?

Powerhouse Excursion

Our Excursion to the Powerhouse Museum

On Tuesday 28 of August all of the A B E classes had an excursion to the Powerhouse Museum. First we met at Granville station and then we caught the 9.30am train to Central Station. We walked from there to the Powerhouse Museum. It took us
about 15 minutes to get there. Then every body bought a ticket to enter the Museum.

Two volunteers who as guides came and gave us some information about the things in the Museum. Then they separated the students and teachers into two groups to show us the past present and future things in the Museum. Most of the time, we walked with Micky to watch and to talk about things.

I saw a woman feeding her baby through special clothes and also I saw the Motoman playing machine. It was very interesting and it was invented in 1970. We saw many things before lunch .We had lunch at 12.30pm outside in the courtyard of the museum. After that we went back to the Museum to watch the big and beautiful clock and also we heard some stories about that. Then we left the Powerhouse Museum and walked back to Central Station
and caught a train from there to Granville station.

Nancy’s Jam Biscuits

Ingredients
4 cups SR flour
1 cup caster sugar
1 block 250g Allowrie Unsalted butter
2 eggs
Jar apricot jam

Utensils
Bowl, measuring cup (250 ml)

Method
1 Put Flour in bowl
2 Add melted butter
3 Add sugar and eggs
4 Mix it together with hands
5 Lay dough on bench and roll out to about 1 cm thick
6 Cut out circles using a glass /cup to the size you want
7 Place on tray leaving a space between biscuits
8 Now press in the middle of each
9 Put a little jam on each.
10 Place in a preheated oven on 250˚C for about 10 minutes

Sport at Lunchtime

Some of our young students are now playing sport at lunchtime. It's a new idea and it's a great way to make friends and have some exercise and fresh air at the same time.
