The Melbourne Cup

On Tuesday November 3, all the students from the centre joined together to celebrate the Melbourne Cup. Everyone combined to take part in four special activities.
First of all, they watched a video about the history and the culture of the Cup. It told them about the horses, the fashion and gambling on the day. It also told about a very famous horse called Phar Lap.
Next, they separated into groups. One group took part in a sweep, another group had a horse race and a third group did a quiz about the Cup.
There was one other group that was making hats called fascinators. People had to cut some net and sewed it onto a hair comb. Then they glued on a flower. Later, some people were wearing their hats.
This was an interesting day because I learned lots of things on this special day.
Jason
The Melbourne Cup morning was a lot of fun.
Here are some of the photos from the day. If you would like to see more, go to the P drive and look there.

MEVI -Re enrolling in your course for 2010
Dear all,
Soon you will be receiving a letter in the mail about re enrolling for 2010. If you are re enrolling in the same level you will do this through a process called MEVI. This is what your letter in the mail will be about and you will do this in 2009.
If you are going into a different level or course in 2010 you will enrol next year. Your teacher will be discussing with you what level and course you will be returning to next year. Some of you will finish your studies with us at the end of this year and we hope you go on to do other things.
If you are finishing level 3 this year we may be able to offer you another course -course number 2244 Statement of Attainment in Language, Literacy and Numeracy if you have clear goals about the reading and writing you still need to work on.
We have been told by our faculty director that the student contribution will increase in 2010 from $25 a semester to $30 a semester. You can pay this when you accept your MEVI offer or next year when you enrol.
If you have any concerns at all please talk to your teacher or talk to the head teachers -Jane or I.
Enjoy your studies for the next 6 weeks.

Excursion
Standing outside St James station we saw 3 towers, Sydney tower, an hexagonal building and church spires.
In Hyde Park we saw two sculptures, one of Queen Victoria and opposite was King George IV standing on a cube which had seven circular steps.
At Sydney Eye Hospital there was a large, beautiful sculpture. The base was an octagonal prism with a tall cylinder in the middle holding a large circular dish and further up a small circular dish. It would be a beautiful fountain.
Inside Customs House there was an amazing model of the city under the floor.

The Shapes Excursion

Last Thursday, we went on an excursion to the city. We met together at Granville station at 9:30am. There were 12 people in my group and the teachers.
First we walked around Macquarie Street and looked at some sculptures. Our teacher Kerry showed and explained about the different shapes. They were very nice structures.
After that, we went to the Art Gallery of NSW, then we walked around the Botanic Gardens. We saw a lot of bats in the trees. They looked like fruit.
Before we came back to the train station, we passed the Opera House.
Finally, we said goodbye at Granville station.
It was an interesting excursion. I won't forget it!

Mr Bean In The Park

One day Mr Bean went to the park.
He took his camera because he wanted to take some photos. First he took a picture of himself but it was no good. He asked a man to take a photo of him. The man took one photo.
Then he asked Mr Bean to move back and to turn around and face the sculptures. While Mr Bean wasn’t looking , the man ran away with the camera.
Then Mr Bean searched the park and found the man. He took a rubbish bin and put it over him so the man couldn't move.He jabbed him with his pen until he yelled. He found the police but the man ran away.
Later that day Mr Bean went to the police station for
a line up. He walked along the line looking closely at the faces but he did not recognise the robber.
In the end, he had a good idea. He asked the police man to put rubbish bins on all the people in the line. This time when he walked along he jabbed each one and listened. When he reached number five he knew he had found him.

And now for the Lilli Pilli jam recipe.....

Lilly Pilly Jam
* Deseed berries and place in saucepan, just covered with water. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for around 30 minutes.
* If desired, strain the mixture through a sieve, or cloth.
* Measure the amount of liquid you have and return it to the pan. Add the same volume of sugar and the juice of 1 lemon per litre of liquid.
* Return to the boil, then reduce to a high simmer for around 30 minutes, before testing on a saucer to see if it has set (place a teaspoon full on a saucer and place in the freezer for a minute, if it has formed a skin when you run your finger through it, it is set).
* Bottle into hot sterilised jars.

Science in ABE

What is a Lilli Pilli?
How fast is your heart beating?
How do colours mix?
What is inside a bubble?
On Monday and Tuesday this week, stage 2 and the Migrant Youth Group were busy doing science experiments.
Anne took students around the college looking closely at different types of plants.
Jenny mixed milk and colours in an experiment with surface tension.
Madeleine and Sally helped students to find their own pulse and heart rate.
And Kerry showed people how to make better bubbles.
After the experiments, we all talked about what we had discovered. What did you learn?

Welcome to 2009 / The Victorian Bushfires

Hi everyone,
It's great to have you back again for another year of study. Please keep checking the blog for new activities to try. We keep adding..... so keep looking....
It is also a very sad time for all Australians with the Victorian bush fires. It is hard to know how we can help. Many Australians are giving money while others are donating clothes, food or services. It is at times like these that you will see many great acts of kindness.
Hope to see you more often on the blog. Post a comment to have your say aboout things.

Sculpture By The Sea 2008
In early November, many students from ABE headed off to Bondi to see tbis year's "Sculpture By The Sea." As usual it was spectacular and very special to those students who had never been to the beach before.
If you have never been, take your family with you for a great day out.

Movie Morning
On the last Friday of Term 3, all the classes joined together for a special movie session.
First, we talked about the different types of movies you can
see
like comedy, horror, drama, romance, musical, documentary and sci-fi.
Then we talked about the plot, the characters and the setting.
We watched "Happy Feet" until we had a technical hitch when the DVD kept freezing. At intermission we had popcorn and jaffas just like a 'real' cinema.
After we came back to class, we watched some of "Cheaper by the Dozen."
It was a really funny movie and we would have liked to see the ending. Maybe next time?

Next, we had the Karen people dance, the dance was so wonderful. I felt very excited because I hadn’t seen the Karen dance before; it was so good. After the dance Kevin Heyes said a lot of the thank yous to all the members and all the teachers. He spoke for so long, it made me feel scared because after Kevin Heyes, it was my turn . So that’s why I felt scared. I introduced our art teacher Phong Le, he always tells us "YOU CAN DO IT" and he opened the art exhibition, and he showed us a video about our class.
After, the New Life performance we had many delicious foods and drinks. Everybody felt so happy and they were very excited. I was the one who served people. I brought the food while I walked around. I said "Would you like something to eat?". The people were very excited to eat and they took a lot of photos.
Finally, I felt our New Life performance was so happy and so great, because everyone was very happy. I think we should have more performances like this . At the end of the day we had to go home. We said good- bye to our teachers.

Yesterday the Migrant Youth Access Course students gave a performance called “New Life”. We all had a wonderful day with the ABE teachers and students. First I helped Phong with the pictures and then I went to the door to greet people and thanked them for coming. While I was greeting people yesterday, I saw two IEC teachers from my old school. When I finished greeting people I went to see the Karen dance. It was a special dance to me. After that I had some food. It was delicious food. And then I took some photos with teachers and students.
In my opinion I really enjoyed the day.
